Dr. Roger Hsu
President and CEO

As CEO, Roger works with other senior managers to set the strategic direction of VIMA's products, market, financial, and operational growth.

Prior to joining VIMA, Roger was the CEO of Digimove Technology, an innovative IC startup. His responsibilities included both product and business development. Before starting Digimove, Roger was a senior technical manager at Synopsys Inc., a leading EDA company.

Roger received a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California, and a BS from National Taiwan University.

 

Dr. Tim Cheng
Founder and Chairman

As Chairman of VIMA Technologies, Tim Cheng brings more than 15 years of expertise in the areas of multimedia computing, electronic design and test automation to his role. His previous experience includes positions as the Founding Chief Technology Advisor of Verplex Systems, and as Consultant/Technical Advisor to Lucent Technologies, LSI Logic and Incentia, among others. In addition, Tim's technical accomplishments have been recognized with numerous awards from both the government and private sectors, including the National Science Foundation, the IEEE Computer Society, the University of California, Intel, HP, NEC, Fujitsu, Lucent Technologies, the Semiconductor Industry Association, and the Semiconductor Research Corporation.

Also a Professor and Chair of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a Fellow of IEEE, Tim has published 3 books and more than 200 technical articles and holds 9 US patents. Previous to this, he was a researcher at AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1988-1993.

Tim received a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, and a BS from National Taiwan University.

 

Dr. Edward Chang
Founder

Bringing more than 15 years of industrial and research experience in the areas of multimedia computing, operating systems, transaction management and workflow systems to his role as Chief Technology Officer, Edward Chang helps advise VIMA Technologies in the company's technological study, design and development efforts.

A recipient of the IBM Faculty Partnership Award in 2000 and 2001, and the NSF Career Award in 2002, Ed's recent work focuses on multimedia computing, with a special concentration on learning and measuring perceptual similarity. His findings have attracted keen interest from government, industry, and higher-education institutions, and he has been invited to make presentations on this topic at a variety of forums, including the CIA; NSF-sponsored workshops at INRIA and Harvard University; ACM- and IEEE-sponsored conferences; HP, IBM, and SONY research centers; Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley; and UCLA.

Currently on the faculty of Electrical Engineering Department at the University of California at Santa Barbara, Ed previously spent 10 years doing product development and research at Digital Equipment Corporation and Sun Microsystems.

Ed received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Computer Science from Stanford University, and an MS in IEOR from the University of California at Berkeley. 

 

Dr. John Zhu
Chief Scientist

John Zhu is a researcher in Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of California at Santa Barbara. His past research experiences include Microsoft Research Asia and Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories.

John received his doctoral degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, his Masters of Computer Science from the Zhejiang University, China.

 

Dr. Hector Garcia-Molina
Technical Advisor

As Technical Advisor, Hector Garcia-Molina helps support VIMA Technologies by providing assistance with high-level technical strategy and development. Currently holding positions as both the Leonard Bosack Professor of Computer Science and the Sandra Lerner Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, he is also Chairman of the Computer Science Department at Stanford and is an internationally renowned expert in distributed computing systems and database systems. A Fellow of the ACM and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Oracle Board of Directors, Hector received the 1999 ACM SIGMOD Innovations Award, and was a member the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC).

Hector received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey, in Mexico, and an MS in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University.

Dr. Jeffrey D. Ullman
Technical Advisor

Jeff Ullman brings to his role as Technical Advisor of VIMA Technologies more than 30 years of experience in the areas of computer science, engineering and database systems. Currently the S. W. Ascherman Professor of Engineering at Stanford University, Jeff sits on numerous Boards of Directors, including Google, Pharmquest, Viquity and TargetMarketing. He has published more than 15 books and 150 articles, and has been the recipient of awards from both the academic and industry communities, such as the 1996 ACM SIGMOD Contributions and Best Paper Awards, the 2000 Knuth Prize, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Paris.

Jeff received a BS in Engineering Mathematics from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University.

Dr. Yi-Leh Wu
Technical Advisor

Yi-Leh Wu is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Information Engineering at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.  Prior to joining the faculty, Yi-Leh led research and software development projects full-time as engineering manager at VIMA Technologies for nearly four years.

Yi-Leh received his doctoral degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, his Masters of Computer Science from the University of Southern California, and his BS in Information and Computer Engineering from Chung-Yuan Christian University, Taiwan.
